On March 16th I’ll be participating in the 22nd annual Big Climb with my fellow masochists from CrossFit Eastside. We will race up the 1,311 steps of the Columbia Center — the tallest building in Washington.
The climb benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If you’re in the mood to donate, you can do so here.
Update: Official time: 12:57. Full results here.
Note to self: Do not complain about difficulty level in front of firefighters who do the same climb wearing a mask and 70 lbs of gear.
Back in the BBS era I used to pretend to be an ANSI artist. Today’s Metafilter post led me to discover Sixteen Colors where, lo and behold, I found my old work:
The first one is a collaboration with my cousin Andy, who did the fonts. The last three are entirely mine. All of them are, of course, ripoffs from Image Comics. Amazing that this stuff has managed to survive since 1995.
(Many thanks to Doug Moore and Sixteen Colors for preserving this stuff.)
I’d never heard of anycast until I read Mark Jeftovic’s post today. Seems that my DNS host uses anycast to improve their resiliency to DDoS attacks.
Essentially you have multiple hosts on the public internet with identical routable IP-addresses, and use traditional routing protocols to guide traffic to the closest one. This is really only suitable for connectionless protocols, like DNS. Neat stuff.
More details can of course be found at the usual repository of all human knowledge.
I use Google Notifier on my Mac. Here are a couple tweaks that make it much better:
