Real Guitar Hero >> Fake Guitar Hero

So you won the Guitar Hero contest at your local GameStop? Oh, and what’s that? You can flawlessly execute Through the Fire and Flames? On expert difficulty, no less — wow.

Prepare for bubble-burstage.

Your skills are jack squat compared to Herman Li from the actual band — DragonForce. This inhuman freak shreds faster than a Cuisinart.

(Don’t miss the close-up insets at 3:22.)

I have officially begun growing my hair out.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is next on my list of Wii Virtual Console games to download.

Wii Virtual Console

Drew and I had a blast this weekend playing some classic NES games thanks to the Wii’s Virtual Console. We played the original Zelda and Tecmo Bowl. These games were 500 Wii points each (5 bucks) and took only a few minutes to download.

I was a bit surprised that Drew didn’t laugh at the graphics. Clearly, game play matters more.

Insane Big Brain Academy Video

Here’s a video of “Darkgigs_Xx” scoring 1649g in Big Brain Academy in a single practice test. This is insane. I’m not ashamed to say that this is better than my overall best score (which is the sum of five of these tests).

Update:
Apparently his best overall score is a jaw dropping 4071g!

Update 2:
This BBA walkthru contains some good tips to improve your score.

Tetris DS Cheater

Kassidy was playing Tetris DS today and got matched up with a cheater. Somehow, he never got anything besides blue “line” pieces. If we run into him again, I’ll try and get a picture of it.

Update: Got ‘em.

Nintendo DS Lite

From the impulse buy department, here’s a picture of my new Nintendo DS Lite:

New Super Mario Bros on Nintendo DS Lite

The designers of the New Super Mario Bros. found some cool ways to utilize the two screens. For instance, when Mario goes down a pipe, the game switches to the lower screen.

Update:

I got myself a copy of Tetris DS and discovered another cool feature: you can play online (via WiFi) without any monthly-fee baloney.

Tech Update:
The DS wouldn’t associate with my DIY Linux access point until I switched from WEP Open (insecure) to WEP Shared (even less secure). With MADWiFi, the required command is iwpriv ath0 authmode 2.

Another World Remastered

My childhood favorite videogame, Another World, has been remastered and reissued for the PC. Since the game is heavily vector-based, it looks great at modern high resolutions. You can pick it up for 7€ here.

Out of This World

Today I was reading Andy’s blog and noticed his description of a really great old video game called Out of This World (also know as Another World, in Europe). This is quite possibly my favorite game of all time. You can read about it in detail at Home of The Underdogs, but here are some quick facts:

  • It was written in 1991 by Eric Chahi and was available for DOS, Amiga, various consoles, etc.
  • The DOS version works quite well under DOSEMU. Proof here.
  • There was actually a sequel which hardly anyone knows about, because it was only available on Sega CD. The sequel was called “Heart of the Alien”.
  • If you have l33t haxor skills, and you can find the ROM, you can play the Sega CD version on Windows or Linux using the excellent GENS emulator
  • If emulation isn’t your thing, and you can find it, you can use the raw engine to interpret the game files natively on just about any platform that has an SDL port. Incidently, raw was written by Cyx — the same fella who contributed heavily to the scummvm project.

Realism Sucks

Note to game developers: realism sucks. Here are my top-seven coolest features of the original Quake (the best multiplayer FPS ever made):

  1. Unrealistic Damage: Fully-juiced opponents can survive 4 rockets to the head.
  2. Rocket-Jumping: Jump higher by shooting the floor beneath you (possible because self-damage is dealt at 50%)
  3. Zero Footstep Noise: Sneaky by default.
  4. Instant Weapon Switching: Allows for bad-ass combos.
  5. Wall Running / Zig-zag Running: Exploit a bug in the game to run faster.
  6. Air Control: Change heading mid-jump.
  7. Strafe-Jumping: Jump further by using the same bug mentioned above.

Please note that not a one of these is realistic. Many were unintended as well.

Quake

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I dedicated (squandered?) a couple of years of my life to a game called Quake. I learned a few things about myself, and a lot about networking, but mostly I had a metric shitload of fun.

The first “con” I ever attended was the Manhattan Memorial Day Marathon in May of 1997. I was 19 years old. I remember watching Honus rocket-jump all over DM6. I couldn’t believe people could actually get so good at a game. I was hooked. I attended a bunch of cons over the next two years, until the “net quake” scene sort of died out. I got pretty good. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been better at anything in my entire life.

In the spirit of nostalga, I dug out some old screen shots and demos.

I miss the old days.
